Drop Cloth Decorative Cushion

Hi Everybody!

Mr. M. and I were taking what we like to call a Bumming Around Day a couple of weeks ago. That's where we head into Edmonton with no purpose except to spontaneously stop wherever we get the notion, maybe have a Tim's, you get the idea. 
We don't necessarily buy anything. We just hang out. 
Once in awhile we all need a day with no goals in mind, yes?

This time the car took us to Chapters...

 ...where I spotted these:

I did a double-take when I saw the price tag.

Did you know that you can purchase a 9'x 12' drop cloth for less?
Of course you did; you're a DIY'er!
Anyway, let's get started on these pretties!

Measure your cushion and add 1" for 1/2" seam allowance all around.

My cushions are 18"x 18", so I cut out two squares 19"x 19".

I chose a much shorter stencil to make for my pillows.

Cut out a front and a back from the drop cloth.

Cut your stencil and center it on your fabric. 

Use masking tape to hold in it place.

Using a stencil brush or small paint brush with very stiff bristles, 

apply the paint in a pouncing motion. To paint the "o" and the "e",

tape the center piece down and fill in as much as you can, then

remove the tape and touch it up.

Lift your stencil off carefully. 

Let the paint dry thoroughly, and heat-set the paint by pressing it on the wrong 

side of the fabric for about thirty seconds, no steam.

Press the bottom edges under 1/2". Open up the fold and zig-zag or serge the edge.

Pin right sides together, and sew around the three unfinished sides. 

Finish the edges with a zig-zag or serging stitch.

Press the seams to one side, and press the fold up.

 Turn right side out. Here is how the opening looks.

Insert your pillow form and pin the opening together.

Using a long straight stitch on your maching, sew the opening closed.

You may have to squish the pillow form flat to do the seam.

I never hand-sew if I can get away with it!

I love this font. 

The total cost for these two cushions is about $3.00. 

The pillow forms are from our old sofa-bed, which is also

where I got the cushions for my $8.00 ottoman. 

 And there is still a lot of drop cloth left to play with!

Update: I had a question about the font and size.

It is Snell Roundhand, size 340.
