Create a Valentine's Collage

Create Valentine's Art From Paper You Make

Hi Everyone,

I love to make my own papers for collage, and thought I would share with you this fun and easy way to make some for yourself, and use them to create some pretty Valentine's art.
I repurposed an old frame that had an elephant print in it.
It was time to say Bye-Bye to Mr. Elephant and Hello to some Heart Art!

Here are the items I used:

 Picture Frame
Board or Sturdy Cardboard That Fits inside the Frame
White Garbage Bag
Spritzer of Water
Tissue Paper
Liquid Acrylic Paints or Craft Paints in your choice of colors.
I used Red, Pink, and Iridescent Gold.
White Acrylic (for basecoat),
Water and Containers for Mixing (I like to use votive glasses)
Soft Paint Brush like a Watercolor brush
Mod Podge or Acrylic Gloss Medium
Scissors
A rag or Paper Towels

Cut your garbage bag along two sides, open it up, and lay the tissue paper on it.
Mix one teaspoon of paint with two or three teaspoons of water. Lightly spritz the
paper with water. Brush the pink paint gently over a section of the paper. It's
important to keep your brush full of the diluted paint and not to work it too
much, otherwise the paper will tear. Rinse the brush and repeat over another
section with the red, and the last section with the iridescent gold.

The tissue paper will crinkle as it dries.
Once it's dry it peels right off the plastic bag.

I made some heart templates from a cereal box (what else?),
traced the various sizes onto the tissue paper and cut them out.

I used the board to trace a square piece of tissue paper and
cut it out to use as a background for the heart layers.
I painted the board white so that the colors would really stand out.

I Mod Podged the tissue to my board.

I brushed a layer of Mod Podge over the tissue paper, and set the
hearts on it, applying the Mod Podge on top of each heart as I went.
Here is how I arranged them:

I painted my old brown frame with a layer of the gold, then dry-brushed some
of the white over it. I popped the collage into the frame, and this is how my
Valentine's display looks.

The large red heart is a gift box that had some perfume in it. My hubby bought it
for me when we were first married, about thirty years ago. (Whew, long time!).
I keep sentimental trinkets and cards in it.

I'm pretty happy with my little collage!

Have a great day Everyone, and Have Fun Crafting!

  5. Huh, I never though about just painting tissue. Certainly faster than dying it if your only doing a few sheets :) Thanks for sharing!
